چکیده
A story on how an attempt to realize W. Heizenberg idea that the neutrino might be a Goldstone particle had led in its development to the discovery of supergravity action.

This paper is part of the lecture given at the TH Division of CERN and devoted to the CXXV anniversary of the birthday of Elie Cartan (1869-1951). It is shown how the methods of differential geometry, due to E. Cartan, were applied to the construction of the supersymmetry transformation law and to the actions for Goldstone fermions and supergravity.
متن کاملSupergravity and the Quest for a Unified Theory
A recollection of some theoretical developments that preceded and followed the first formulation of supergravity theory is presented. Special emphasis is placed on the impact of supergravity on the search for a unified theory of fundamental interactions. Dirac Lecture delivered at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, 19 April 1994 It is a great honour and pleasure to be in...
متن کاملOn Superstring and Supergravity Dimensions
In this paper we shall show how to construct two new superstring theories in dimensions 12 and 16 which satisfy the Lorenz symmetries in 4 dimensions after compactification but which satisfy different symmetry groups before compactification. The arguments are also applied to supergravity theory. We write the first few terms of these new supergravity actions. The new supergravity actions can be ...
متن کاملIs There a Problem with Quantum Wormhole States in N=1 Supergravity?*
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us... ABSTRACT The issue concerning the existence of wormho...
متن کاملNonrenormalizability of (Last Hope) D=11 Supergravity, with a Terse Survey of Divergences in Quantum Gravities
Before turning to the new result that D=11 supergravity is 2-loop nonrenormalizable, we give a very brief history of the ultraviolet problems of ordinary quantum gravity and of supergravities in general D.
